Once I have past the festival gates, 20 meters from the camp site, the bucolic grounds unfurl to reveal a playground for both grownups and children. Between people playing with frisbees, children running in all directions and dogs roaming free, the only gripe you could have is that you will not have the time to discover all that Smida has to offer.
Bass-heavy dub and contemporary club culture are the foundations for Joe Armon-Jones’ phenomenal second album. “Turn to Clear View” builds on the celebrated keys player’s singular vision, exhibiting a sound with flourishes of R&B, hip-hop and p-funk, and featuring regular bandmates Oscar Jerome, Moses Boyd and Nubya Garcia.
I had the pleasure to meet and talk with the Norwegian trumpet player Nils Petter Molvaer at the 22nd edition of Garana Jazz Festival, where he performed alongside the reggae legends Sly & Robbie, and his Scandinavian collaborators Eivind Aarset & Vladislav Delay.
Looking at the world of music one could live a feeling of hope. There are a lot of good musicians, passionate promoters and public eager to hear new sounds. Of course, things don’t move always as fast as we would like, but still, things are changing for the best for those who work and follow their path.
Iordache is first and foremost a jazz music lover. His passion for jazz drove him in becoming a musician in the 80s, playing saxophone. He gradually started to compose, produce and in 2009 he founded a label.
Radu is active in four different projects: BRUM, Helen, Sebastian Spanache Trio and Alexandrina, playing either jazz or electronic music.
